I’ve been collecting scarves. They’re beautiful art works printed or embroidered onto quality fabrics, and best of all, they are affordable. There are so many ways one can wear scarves. You can wear them over your head, wrapped around your neck, draped over your shoulder, belted across your waist, or as an accessory for your accessories, such as your purses, your shoes, and so on. You can wear them in the Surrey, the Cannes, the Geneva, the Copenhagen, the Jackson Hole, the Tahoe, the Mission, the Berkeley, the Madison Ave, the Marrakech, the Kilimanjaro, and in anywhere-style that you may locate yourself. You can wear them in the Choker, the Bunny Ears, the Scullery Maid, the Audrey, the Jackie, the Ninja, the preppy, the lazy, the knotty, and in the infinity ways that you may fancy.
But what I want to do is to make clothes out of them. Inspired by the ancient way of dressing, which is to turn a piece of cloth into clothing by ways of folds and pleats, I would like to do the same for my scarves. The idea is to do without any cutting so that when deconstructed, the cloth can be restored to its beautiful original self. Only folds, pleats, and darts, which are stitched-in folds, are utilized.

For this experiment, I have transformed two identical square scarves into a little black dress, or as we have affectionately abbreviated them – the LBD. Its construction is simple – the neckline is fitted by gathering an edge into pleats, few darts are sewn in to hug and drape along the body, and the dress flares out toward the bottom hem as wide as the scarf’s edge, creating a flattering A-line silhouette. With only a small button to tie at the neckline, putting on this dress is also easy. The fabric is silk, lending a smooth silky feel to wearing it.

The third silk scarf depicts a lovely scene from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is draped in the kimono style and requires no stitching. Simply fold the scarf in half and knot the matching loose corners together, creating two knots. Insert one arm through one open end, bring the scarf behind you and repeat with the other arm so that one knot comes over your right shoulder and one knot comes over your left. Adjust to let the scarf fall over your shoulder.
It is a romantic dress for many social events. It is simple to wear, with a look that is delightful and beautiful, and a plush and pleasurable feel.
